Why Choose Our Fractional Laser Resurfacing

ResurFace fractional laser

We use the ResurFace, a 2940nm fractional laser that splits its beam into thousands of microscopic columns, each smaller than a hair follicle.

Rebuilds collagen

Each tiny column prompts the skin to repair itself and make new collagen and elastin, leaving it firmer and smoother.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with your skin type and medical history checked before we start.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. A course of three to five sessions for most people

Fractional laser resurfacing is a treatment for skin that has lost its smoothness: fine lines, wrinkles, rough texture, enlarged pores, sun damage and scarring. It gives more noticeable results than IPL, with a short recovery. If you live in Morriston and want firmer, smoother skin, we offer it at our clinic in Llanelli.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Is Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional resurfacing uses a laser to create thousands of microscopic treatment points in the skin, leaving the skin between them untouched. That is what “fractional” means: only a fraction of the skin is treated at each session.

It is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, improve texture, reduce pore size and soften acne scars and age spots.

IPL and long-pulsed YAG treatments have little to no downtime. Fractional resurfacing is the option for people who want a bigger change and can allow a few days for the skin to recover.

How the ResurFace Laser Works

Illustration: microscopic columns of laser light remove tiny areas of the outer skin while delivering a bulk of heat into the deeper layers. As the skin heals, fresh new skin cells smooth the texture and tighten pores, while the heat stimulates new collagen and elastin that firm and tighten the skin over the following months. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We use the ResurFace fractional laser. It releases a 2940nm wavelength through an optical beam splitter, producing thousands of microscopic beams around 350 microns across, smaller than a hair follicle.

Each beam creates a tiny column of controlled thermal damage in the skin. The body responds by healing those columns and producing a significant amount of new collagen.

Because the surrounding skin is left intact, the skin heals quickly.

What Results to Expect

You can see a difference after one treatment, and the skin carries on improving as new collagen forms. For the best results we usually recommend a course of three to five sessions.

Resurfacing improves lines, texture and tone. It does not stop the skin ageing, and results vary from person to person. We will give you an honest view of what to expect at your consultation.

Recovery is short, and most people need only a few days. Fractional laser treatment is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 3. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Under an hour: most appointments take less than an hour
  • Mild discomfort: some people feel a mild, temporary burning sensation, which is usually well tolerated
  • A few days to recover: most people need only a few days for the skin to settle
  • A course of sessions: three to five sessions are typically recommended
  • Results that build: skin continues to improve as new collagen forms
  • Honest advice: if resurfacing isn’t the right treatment for your skin, we’ll tell you and suggest alternatives

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Come with the area clean: no make-up, perfume, deodorant, or body or face creams.
  • No real or fake tan on the area. Sunbeds and prolonged sun exposure are not allowed in the month before treatment, and any tan must fade completely before we can treat.
  • Use SPF 30 or higher on the area between treatments.
  • Tell us about any change to your medical history, and any medication you take, including anything bought from a chemist or herbalist.
  • Arrive in good time, so we can cool the skin first if needed.
  • We may charge for an appointment that cannot go ahead because of a tan or fake tan.

After each session

  • The area will look very red, like sunburn, and may be swollen. It will feel hot and tender for several hours. Redness and swelling can last a few days.
  • Use cold compresses to ease redness and swelling. If you use an ice pack, put it in a clean plastic bag and wrap it in a soft cloth. Do not put ice directly on the skin.
  • Sleep with your head raised on pillows to reduce facial swelling.
  • While the skin is still red, avoid heavy drinking, saunas and heavy exercise.
  • The skin will feel tight. Vaseline, a soothing serum or a gentle moisturiser can help for the first day or two. Test a small area first.
  • From day two or three the skin becomes flaky and looks bronzed. This lasts about five days and is a sign the skin is renewing. Do not pick at flaking or crusting.
  • After four to five days, once the redness and sensitivity have settled, you can use a very light exfoliator. Keep the skin well moisturised.
  • Avoid hot baths and showers for 24 hours, and cosmetics for about 48 hours. After that, mineral make-up is fine. Remove it gently with plenty of water.
  • Skin usually returns to normal by day seven to ten. Some flakiness can last up to 14 days.
  • Use SPF 30 or higher on the area between treatments and for at least one month after your last one. Sun on treated skin can cause sunburn and dark patches.
  • If the skin blisters, contact us straight away. Keep the area clean and dry, do not pick it, and do not use lotions or creams on open skin. Once healed, use a high-protection sunscreen on the area every day for 12 months.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.
