Why Choose Our Facial Thread Vein Removal

Medical-grade technology

We use the Lynton Lumina, a medical-grade IPL system, with a handpiece suited to small veins on the face.

No needles, no surgery

Treatment uses pulses of light on the surface of the skin, so there is nothing to inject and nothing to cut.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with your skin type and medical history checked before we start.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. Short treatment sessions, with a review of your results

Thread veins, sometimes called spider veins or broken capillaries, are small red, blue or purple veins that show through the skin, often on the cheeks, nose and chin. They are usually harmless, but many people would simply rather not see them in the mirror. At our Llanelli clinic we treat them with IPL, from £30 a session.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Causes Thread Veins?

Thread veins appear when tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin widen and stay visible. They become more common with age, as skin gets thinner and vessels lose some of their elasticity.

Common triggers include sun exposure over the years, a family tendency to them, hormonal changes, and repeated flushing of the skin. They often appear alongside rosacea, which we also treat.

They do not usually go away on their own, which is why many people choose to have them treated.

How Thread Vein Removal Works

Illustration: the light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood inside the vein, heating it until it coagulates. The vein may look darker at first, then over the following weeks the body absorbs it, or it dries and flakes away. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We treat thread veins with intense pulsed light (IPL) from the Lynton Lumina. The light passes through the surface of the skin and is absorbed by the blood inside the vein.

That energy turns to heat, which damages the wall of the vein so it closes. Over the following weeks your body gradually clears it away, and the vein fades from view.

Because the light targets the vein itself, the surrounding skin is largely unaffected.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Treatment works best on small, fine veins close to the surface of the skin, particularly on the face.

We can treat skin types up to type 4 on the Fitzpatrick scale, which runs from very fair skin to light brown skin. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

We check your skin type and medical history at the consultation and tell you honestly whether we expect a good result. If light-based treatment is not the right option for your veins, we will say so and explain what else might help.

Thread Veins on the Face and Legs

This page covers thread veins on the face, which respond well to IPL. Veins on the legs are usually larger and deeper and are treated differently. If your veins are on your legs, see our leg vein removal page, or ask us at your consultation.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Short sessions: most appointments take only a few minutes
  • Mild sensation: most people describe warmth or a brief tingling, which passes quickly
  • Little downtime: some redness is normal afterwards and settles within hours
  • Gradual fading: treated veins fade over the following weeks as the body clears them
  • A short course: small clusters typically need one to three sessions, and larger areas around five to six for the best results
  • Honest advice: if treatment is unlikely to work well for you, we’ll tell you before you start

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Come with the area clean: no make-up, perfume, deodorant, or body or face creams.
  • No real or fake tan on the area. Sunbeds and prolonged sun exposure are not allowed in the month before treatment, and any tan must fade completely before we can treat.
  • Avoid retinol creams on the area for 14 days before treatment.
  • Use SPF 50 on the area between treatments, or keep it covered.
  • Tell us about any change to your medical history, and any medication you take, including anything bought from a chemist or herbalist.
  • Arrive in good time, so we can cool the skin first if needed.
  • We may charge for an appointment that cannot go ahead because of a tan or fake tan.

After each session

  • The area may look red and raised and may tingle. This is normal and settles over the next few days.
  • If the area still feels hot at home, use a cold flannel or cool pack. Do not put ice or ice packs directly on the skin.
  • Occasionally there is swelling or bruising, which can last from one or two days up to one or two weeks. Swelling is usually worst one to two days after treatment. For the face, sleep with your head raised on pillows.
  • A bruise may appear on the treated area. It can last up to 15 days, and as it fades it may leave a brown mark that usually goes within one to three months.
  • Larger vessels can look darker at first. This can take up to four weeks to clear as the body reabsorbs them.
  • Make-up can be applied after several hours if the skin is not sore or broken. Remove it gently, without rubbing.
  • For 24 to 48 hours, avoid hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms, strenuous exercise and anything that raises your body temperature.
  • Wash as normal, but take cool showers and pat the skin dry. Apply aloe vera gel 3 times a day for up to a week. If it feels uncomfortable, treat it as you would sunburn.
  • For a month after treatment, keep the area covered or use SPF 50. Sun on treated skin can cause sunburn and dark patches.
  • If the skin blisters, contact us straight away. Keep the area clean and dry, do not pick it, and do not use lotions or creams on open skin.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Facial Thread Vein Removal in Llanelli: Your Questions Answered

How much does thread vein removal cost?

Prices start from £30 per session and depend on the size of the area. We confirm your price at the free consultation, before any treatment, and you pay per session.

Does it hurt?

There is some discomfort, but it is usually well tolerated. Most people describe warmth or a brief tingling that passes once the treatment is finished.

How many sessions will I need?

Small clusters of veins typically need one to three sessions. Larger areas usually need around five to six sessions for the best results. We’ll give you an estimate at the consultation.

Is there any downtime?

Very little. The skin can look red afterwards, which settles within hours, and most people go straight back to their day. You’ll need to avoid heat for a day or two and protect the area from the sun.

Will the veins come back?

Treated veins should not return, but new ones can appear over time, particularly with sun exposure or if you are prone to them. Sunscreen helps.

Is it suitable for my skin?

We can treat skin types up to type 4 on the Fitzpatrick scale, which covers very fair to light brown skin. We cannot treat tanned skin, including fake tan. We confirm your skin type at the consultation.

Do thread veins go away on their own?

Not usually. Once a small vessel has widened and become visible, it tends to stay that way, which is why treatment is the usual way to reduce them.

Can you treat thread veins on the nose and cheeks?

Yes. The cheeks, nose and chin are the most common areas we treat, and small facial veins are where IPL works best.

How do I book?

Call 01554 227543 or message us on WhatsApp at 07437 164988. Consultations are free, and we’re open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, at 10 Cowell Street, Llanelli.
