Why Choose Our Laser Leg Vein Removal

Lynton Lumina YAG laser

We use the Lynton Lumina long-pulsed YAG laser, which targets the blood inside the vein so it collapses while the skin around it is left alone.

Suitable for all skin types

The long-pulsed YAG laser can be used on every skin type, from very fair to dark. The only limit is that the skin must not be tanned.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with your skin type and medical history checked before we start.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and vein assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. A course of sessions, usually up to six

Spider veins and thread veins on the legs are very common. They show as fine red, blue or purple lines, most often on the thighs, calves and ankles, and they tend to become more noticeable over time. At our Llanelli clinic we treat them with laser, from £30 a session.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Are Leg Veins?

The veins we treat are spider veins and thread veins: small, fine vessels that sit close to the surface of the skin. They are harmless, but many people feel self-conscious about them.

They can be linked to family history, hormonal changes, pregnancy, long periods of standing and simply getting older.

Laser treatment is for these small surface veins. It is not a treatment for varicose veins, which are larger, raised veins and need to be assessed by a GP or vascular specialist. We will tell you at your consultation which you have.

How Laser Leg Vein Removal Works

Illustration: the light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood inside the vein, heating it until it coagulates. The vein may look darker at first, then over the following weeks the body absorbs it, or it dries and flakes away. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We treat leg veins with the Lynton Lumina long-pulsed YAG laser. The laser is directed at the vein through the skin, and its light is absorbed by haemoglobin, the red pigment in the blood, which heats the vein and causes it to collapse.

Over the following weeks the body gradually clears the treated vein away, and it fades from view.

A cryo-cooler chills the skin throughout, which keeps treatment comfortable without numbing injections.

What Results to Expect

Leg veins fade gradually over the weeks after each session. Most people need a course of treatments, typically up to six sessions, to see a significant improvement.

Results vary with the size and depth of the veins, and treatment does not stop new veins forming in the future. We will give you an honest view of what to expect at your consultation.

We can treat all skin types. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

Veins on the Face

We also treat facial thread veins and redness. See our thread vein removal page for details.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Around 30 minutes: most sessions take about half an hour, depending on the size of the area
  • Mild discomfort: most people feel warmth or tingling, which is usually well tolerated and passes once treatment is finished
  • A course of sessions: typically up to six sessions for a significant improvement
  • Redness that settles: the skin can look red and slightly raised afterwards, which usually settles within a few days
  • No downtime: you can return to normal activities straight away, avoiding heat for the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Honest advice: if laser isn’t the right option for your veins, we’ll tell you before you start

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Come with the area clean: no make-up, perfume, deodorant, or body or face creams.
  • No real or fake tan on the area. Sunbeds and prolonged sun exposure are not allowed in the month before treatment, and any tan must fade completely before we can treat.
  • Avoid retinol creams on the area for 14 days before treatment.
  • Use SPF 50 on the area between treatments, or keep it covered.
  • Tell us about any change to your medical history, and any medication you take, including anything bought from a chemist or herbalist.
  • Arrive in good time, so we can cool the skin first if needed.
  • We may charge for an appointment that cannot go ahead because of a tan or fake tan.

After each session

  • The area may look red and raised and may tingle. This is normal and settles over the next few days.
  • If the area still feels hot at home, use a cold flannel or cool pack. Do not put ice or ice packs directly on the skin.
  • Occasionally there is swelling or bruising, which can last from one or two days up to one or two weeks. Swelling is usually worst one to two days after treatment. For the face, sleep with your head raised on pillows.
  • A bruise may appear on the treated area. It can last up to 15 days, and as it fades it may leave a brown mark that usually goes within one to three months.
  • Larger vessels can look darker at first. This can take up to four weeks to clear as the body reabsorbs them.
  • Make-up can be applied after several hours if the skin is not sore or broken. Remove it gently, without rubbing.
  • For 24 to 48 hours, avoid hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms, strenuous exercise and anything that raises your body temperature.
  • Wash as normal, but take cool showers and pat the skin dry. Apply aloe vera gel 3 times a day for up to a week. If it feels uncomfortable, treat it as you would sunburn.
  • For a month after treatment, keep the area covered or use SPF 50. Sun on treated skin can cause sunburn and dark patches.
  • If the skin blisters, contact us straight away. Keep the area clean and dry, do not pick it, and do not use lotions or creams on open skin.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.
