Why Choose Our Laser & IPL Rosacea Treatment

Lynton Lumina IPL

We use the Lynton Lumina, a medical-grade intense pulsed light system, to target the blood vessels behind the redness.

Gentle and non-invasive

There are no needles and no surgery. Light is absorbed by the vessels, which collapse and are cleared away by the body.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with your skin type and medical history checked before we start.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. A course of three to six sessions for most people

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness, flushing and visible blood vessels on the face. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be controlled. At our Llanelli clinic we use IPL to reduce the redness and visible vessels, from £30 a session.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. It typically causes persistent redness across the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead, episodes of flushing, and small visible blood vessels.

It tends to come and go, and can be set off by triggers such as sun, heat, alcohol, spicy food and stress. It cannot be cured, but treatment can keep the visible symptoms under control.

How IPL Treatment for Rosacea Works

Illustration: the light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood inside the tiny vessels, heating it until it coagulates. The redness may look darker at first, then over the following weeks the body clears the vessels and the skin calms. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We treat rosacea with the Lynton Lumina intense pulsed light (IPL) system, which is used within the NHS and approved in the NHS Supply Chain. It emits pulses of light that are absorbed by the haemoglobin in the small blood vessels causing the redness.

The light heats the vessels, which collapse. Over the following weeks the body gradually clears them away, leaving the skin less red and more even in tone.

Because the light targets the vessels, the skin around them is left alone.

What Results to Expect

IPL reduces the redness and visible vessels of rosacea. It does not cure the condition, and results vary from person to person.

Most people need three to six sessions for a significant improvement, with a maintenance treatment every few months as needed to keep the redness under control.

IPL is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 4. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Come with the area clean: no make-up, perfume, deodorant, or body or face creams.
  • No real or fake tan on the area. Sunbeds and prolonged sun exposure are not allowed in the month before treatment, and any tan must fade completely before we can treat.
  • Avoid retinol creams on the area for 14 days before treatment.
  • Use SPF 50 on the area between treatments, or keep it covered.
  • Tell us about any change to your medical history, and any medication you take, including anything bought from a chemist or herbalist.
  • Arrive in good time, so we can cool the skin first if needed.
  • We may charge for an appointment that cannot go ahead because of a tan or fake tan.

After each session

  • The area may look red and raised and may tingle. This is normal and settles over the next few days.
  • If the area still feels hot at home, use a cold flannel or cool pack. Do not put ice or ice packs directly on the skin.
  • Occasionally there is swelling or bruising, which can last from one or two days up to one or two weeks. Swelling is usually worst one to two days after treatment. For the face, sleep with your head raised on pillows.
  • A bruise may appear on the treated area. It can last up to 15 days, and as it fades it may leave a brown mark that usually goes within one to three months.
  • Larger vessels can look darker at first. This can take up to four weeks to clear as the body reabsorbs them.
  • Make-up can be applied after several hours if the skin is not sore or broken. Remove it gently, without rubbing.
  • For 24 to 48 hours, avoid hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms, strenuous exercise and anything that raises your body temperature.
  • Wash as normal, but take cool showers and pat the skin dry. Apply aloe vera gel 3 times a day for up to a week. If it feels uncomfortable, treat it as you would sunburn.
  • For a month after treatment, keep the area covered or use SPF 50. Sun on treated skin can cause sunburn and dark patches.
  • If the skin blisters, contact us straight away. Keep the area clean and dry, do not pick it, and do not use lotions or creams on open skin.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.
