Why Choose Our Laser Tattoo Removal

The right laser for your ink

We use both picosecond and active Q-switch lasers, and choose between them based on your ink colours and skin type.

Removal or fade, your choice

Clear a tattoo completely, or fade it just enough for your artist to cover it with something new.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with local anaesthetic available if you want a pain-free session.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and patch test
  2. Personalised plan and a fixed price per session
  3. Sessions spaced 6 to 10 weeks apart

A tattoo that once meant something can become the thing you cover up at work, on holiday or in photos. If you live in Swansea and you’ve been putting off doing something about it, you have more options than a long sleeve or an expensive city-centre clinic.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli, a short trip from Swansea. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we remove and fade tattoos with medical-grade picosecond and Q-switch lasers, from £30 a session.

Every client starts with a free consultation and patch test. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest look at your tattoo and what’s achievable.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Actually Works

Illustration: the laser passes through the skin surface and shatters the ink beneath it into tiny fragments. Phagocytes (immune cells) engulf the fragments and carry them away through the lymphatic system. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

Tattoo ink sits in the skin as particles too large for your body to clear. The laser fires very short pulses of light that the ink absorbs, which shatters those particles into much smaller fragments.

Over the following weeks, your immune system carries the fragments away through the lymphatic system. Each session breaks down more ink, so the tattoo fades step by step.

Short pulses matter. Our picosecond and active Q-switch lasers deliver high peak power in a very brief burst, which breaks up ink while limiting heat in the surrounding skin. That lowers the risk of scarring and pigment change compared with older, slower lasers.

Complete Removal or Fading for a Cover-Up

Complete removal. A full course breaks the ink down until the tattoo is no longer visible. Black ink usually responds fastest; some colours take more sessions.

Fading for a cover-up. If you want new artwork over an old tattoo, a few sessions can lighten it enough for your artist to work over cleanly. Tell us what they need and we’ll plan around it.

Keeping Treatment Comfortable

Most people describe the sensation as an elastic band flicking against the skin. We use a Cryocooler, which blows chilled air over the area before, during and after treatment to numb the skin and reduce swelling.

You can also use numbing cream beforehand. Because we are a doctor-led clinic, local anaesthetic is available for a small additional fee if you would prefer a pain-free session.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Visible fading: most tattoos lighten after each session
  • A realistic timescale: professional tattoos can take up to 12 sessions; amateur tattoos often need far fewer
  • Time to heal: sessions are spaced 6 to 10 weeks apart so your body can clear the ink
  • Managed discomfort: cold air from the Cryocooler before, during and after, with numbing cream or local anaesthetic as options
  • Short appointments: most sessions take minutes, not hours
  • Aftercare support: a take-home aftercare pack and a team you can call with questions
  • Honest advice: if a tattoo is unlikely to clear fully, we’ll tell you before you start

Why Swansea Clients Choose Cowell St

Most people who travel to us from Swansea come for the same reasons: regulated, doctor-led treatment, lasers matched to their ink, and prices set by tattoo size and agreed before treatment starts.

Registration with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales means we meet the standards required to carry out laser procedures in Wales. Being doctor-led matters when skin type, medical history or medication affects how a tattoo should be treated.

We don’t oversell or over-treat. If laser isn’t right for your tattoo or your skin, we’ll say so at the consultation and explain what else might work.

Your Free Consultation and Patch Test

Your first visit is a proper assessment. We look at the tattoo’s size, colours, age and position, ask about your skin and medical history, and talk through whether you want it gone or faded for a cover-up.

We then carry out a patch test, which shows how your skin responds and helps us choose the right laser settings. You’ll leave with an estimated number of sessions, a fixed price per session and aftercare guidance.

There’s no obligation to go ahead. If you do, we’ll book your first session at a time that suits you.

To secure your appointment we take a £30 deposit. It comes off the price of your treatment, or we refund it in full if you decide not to go ahead. Please read our cancellation policy before you book.

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Come with the area clean: no make-up, perfume, deodorant, or body or face creams.
  • No real or fake tan on the area. Sunbeds and prolonged sun exposure are not allowed in the month before treatment, and any tan must fade completely before we can treat.
  • Use SPF 30 or higher on the area between treatments.
  • Tell us about any change to your medical history, and any medication you take, including anything bought from a chemist or herbalist.
  • Arrive in good time, so we can cool the skin first if needed.
  • We may charge for an appointment that cannot go ahead because of a tan or fake tan.

After each session

  • We cool the area after treatment and apply a soothing serum or aloe vera gel. Keep applying it three times a day for at least one week.
  • A small amount of bleeding can occur. If needed, we cover the area with a non-stick dressing.
  • The tattoo may look bruised, with a grey or purple colour. This fades over the next 7 to 12 days.
  • Mild swelling, redness and tenderness are normal and usually last up to a week.
  • Blisters sometimes form, more often with red ink, followed by a scab or thin crust. Keep the area clean and dry, let it heal by itself, and do not use lotions or creams on open skin.
  • Do not remove scabs or crusts. Let them fall off by themselves. The skin underneath can stay red for several weeks.
  • You can shower or bathe after 24 hours. Pat the area dry, and do not rub it.
  • Do not apply make-up to the area until it has fully healed.
  • Protect the area from the sun for the first two weeks, and use sunblock or avoid sun on it for at least one month.
  • Once the area has fully healed, massaging it may help disperse the pigment.
  • If you see signs of infection, such as strong redness, pus, swelling or tenderness, tell your doctor straight away.
  • The skin can become temporarily lighter or darker after treatment, and sun exposure makes this worse. This usually settles within three to six months, though it can be permanent.

You’ll take home a detailed aftercare pack, and you can call us with any questions while you heal.

Serving Swansea and the Surrounding Area

Swansea has no shortage of tattoo studios, from the city centre and Uplands to Mumbles and Morriston. Tastes change, jobs change and relationships end, so plenty of people across the city are living with ink they’d rather not have.

Our clinic is at 10 Cowell Street in the centre of Llanelli, about 12 miles west of Swansea. Most Swansea clients drive over via Gowerton and the Loughor Bridge, and the train from Swansea to Llanelli is a short direct journey.

We regularly see clients from Brynmill, Uplands, Sketty, Killay, West Cross, Newton, Bishopston, Gorseinon, Gowerton and across Gower, as well as Neath and Port Talbot. Appointments are short, so many people fit a session around work or the school run.

Tattoo Removal near Swansea: Your Questions Answered

How much does tattoo removal cost?

Prices run from £30 a session for a tattoo around 3cm x 3cm to £100 for one around 12cm x 12cm. We confirm your exact price at the free consultation, and you pay per session with no upfront course fee.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the ink, colours, depth and where the tattoo is on your body. Professional tattoos can take up to 12 sessions, while amateur tattoos often clear in far fewer. We’ll give you an honest estimate after assessing it.

Does it hurt?

Most people compare it to an elastic band flicking against the skin. We blow chilled air over the area with a Cryocooler throughout, which makes it far more tolerable. Numbing cream is an option, and because we are doctor-led, so is local anaesthetic.

Can you fade a tattoo for a cover-up?

Yes. Fading usually takes fewer sessions than full removal and gives your tattoo artist a much cleaner base to work on. Tell us what your artist needs and we’ll plan around it.

Will it leave a scar?

The risk is low when the right laser and settings are used and aftercare is followed. The patch test helps us check how your skin responds before a full session. Blistering and temporary changes in skin colour can happen, and we’ll explain how to manage them.

How should I prepare, and what about aftercare?

Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for a month beforehand, and come with the area clean. Afterwards, apply soothing serum or aloe vera gel three times a day for at least a week, wait 24 hours before showering or bathing, do not pick scabs or crusts, and keep the area out of the sun for at least a month. You’ll get a full aftercare sheet.

Does laser tattoo removal work on all colours?

Black and dark inks respond best. Some colours, such as greens and blues, can take more sessions, which is why we use more than one type of laser and assess your tattoo before quoting.
