Why Choose Our Acne Treatment

Lynton Lumina IPL, 585nm

We use the Lynton Lumina IPL with its 585nm handpiece to target the bacteria and inflammation behind breakouts.

Works beneath the surface

Light reaches below the surface, where creams can’t, to calm redness and help reduce excess oil.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with your skin type, acne history and medication checked first.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. A course of three to six sessions, about four weeks apart

Acne is not only a teenage problem. Breakouts, redness and oily skin can carry on well into adult life and affect how you feel about your skin. If you live in Morriston and creams and cleansers have not been enough, IPL treatment at our Llanelli clinic can help to calm active acne and reduce how often you break out.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Causes Acne?

Acne starts when the skin’s oil glands produce too much sebum. That oil, mixed with dead skin cells, blocks the pores, bacteria multiply inside them and the skin becomes inflamed. Morriston clients often describe how breakouts affect their confidence at work and socially.

It shows up as blackheads, whiteheads, red spots and deeper, painful lumps, usually on the face, chest and back. Hormones, family history and some medicines all play a part, and it is not caused by poor hygiene.

Our Llanelli clinic is doctor-led and registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and acne treatment with the Lynton Lumina IPL starts from £60 a session.

How IPL Acne Treatment Works

Illustration: the light destroys the acne-causing bacteria trapped in the blocked pore, and its heat shrinks overactive oil glands so they produce less oil. Over a course of sessions, breakouts calm and the skin settles. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

The Lynton Lumina IPL, fitted with a 585nm handpiece, delivers light pulses that target the bacteria behind acne. It reduces redness and inflammation around active spots and can help control oil, making breakouts less likely.

The same treatment fades post-inflammatory marks, both the red (PIE) and brown (PIH) types. You’ll usually have a course of sessions around four weeks apart.

What Results to Expect

Most people need three to six sessions for a significant improvement, with fewer and less inflamed breakouts as the course goes on. Maintenance treatments can be arranged if needed.

IPL helps to control acne. It is not a permanent cure, and results vary from person to person. For severe or scarring acne we may advise you to see your GP as well, because prescription treatment may be needed.

IPL is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 4. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Half-hour appointments: depending on the size of the area
  • Well tolerated: most people feel warmth or a light tingle
  • Sessions needed: typically three to six, four weeks apart
  • Short-lived redness: fades within a few hours
  • Back to your day: just avoid heat for a day or two
  • Straight answers: we’ll tell you if another approach would suit you better

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for four weeks beforehand. Tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen on the area if it is exposed.
  • Tell us about any medication and skincare you use. We cannot treat you while you are using retinol or taking certain antibiotics, because they make the skin more sensitive to light.

After each session

  • Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours, including hot baths, showers, saunas and excessive exercise. This reduces the risk of blistering.
  • Apply aloe vera gel three to four times a day to soothe the skin and help it heal.
  • Keep the area out of the sun for four weeks, or apply SPF 50 regularly.
  • Do not pick or squeeze spots in the treated area.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Acne Treatment near Morriston: Your Questions Answered

How much does acne treatment cost?

Prices start from £60 per session and depend on the size of the area. We confirm your price at the free consultation, before any treatment.

Does IPL acne treatment hurt?

There’s some discomfort, but most people tolerate it well. Expect a feeling of warmth or tingling that passes once treatment finishes.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people have a course of three to six sessions, about a month apart. We may suggest maintenance sessions to keep results.

How long does a session take?

Usually around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Will IPL cure my acne?

IPL won’t permanently cure acne, but it can significantly reduce active spots and breakouts, with maintenance sessions to help sustain results.

Can I have treatment if I use retinol or take antibiotics?

Not at the same time. Retinol and some antibiotics make the skin more sensitive to light, so we’ll plan your start date around them.

Can IPL help with acne scars?

It lightens marks left by spots. For textured or indented scarring, fractional laser is the better option, and we’ll advise at your consultation.
