Acne is not only a teenage problem. Breakouts, redness and oily skin can carry on well into adult life and affect how you feel about your skin. If you live in Mumbles and creams and cleansers have not been enough, IPL treatment at our Llanelli clinic can help to calm active acne and reduce how often you break out.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Causes Acne?

When the skin produces more oil than it needs, pores can become blocked with sebum and dead cells. Bacteria thrive in those blocked pores, and the result is inflammation and breakouts. For many people in Mumbles, breakouts on the chest and back are most noticeable in summer clothes and swimwear.

You might see blackheads, whiteheads, red spots or tender lumps beneath the skin, most often on the face, chest and back. It’s linked to hormones, genetics and certain medicines, not to how well you wash.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales and doctor-led; we use the Lynton Lumina IPL to treat active acne, from £60 a session.

How IPL Acne Treatment Works

Illustration: the light destroys the acne-causing bacteria trapped in the blocked pore, and its heat shrinks overactive oil glands so they produce less oil. Over a course of sessions, breakouts calm and the skin settles. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We use the Lynton Lumina intense pulsed light (IPL) system with its 585nm handpiece. Pulses of light target the bacteria involved in acne and calm the inflammation and redness around active spots, and can help reduce excess oil, lowering the chance of future breakouts.

IPL also fades the marks spots leave behind: red marks (post-inflammatory erythema, or PIE) and brown marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH). Treatment is given as a course, with sessions about four weeks apart.

What Results to Expect

Most people need three to six sessions for a significant improvement, with fewer and less inflamed breakouts as the course goes on. Maintenance treatments can be arranged if needed.

IPL helps to control acne. It is not a permanent cure, and results vary from person to person. For severe or scarring acne we may advise you to see your GP as well, because prescription treatment may be needed.

IPL is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 4. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Quick sessions: around 30 minutes each
  • Comfortable: a warm, tingling feeling
  • Typical course: three to six treatments, roughly a month apart
  • Mild redness: usually gone within hours
  • Minimal disruption: avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours
  • Clear advice: we’ll be honest if IPL isn’t the best option

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for four weeks beforehand. Tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen on the area if it is exposed.
  • Tell us about any medication and skincare you use. We cannot treat you while you are using retinol or taking certain antibiotics, because they make the skin more sensitive to light.

After each session

  • Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours, including hot baths, showers, saunas and excessive exercise. This reduces the risk of blistering.
  • Apply aloe vera gel three to four times a day to soothe the skin and help it heal.
  • Keep the area out of the sun for four weeks, or apply SPF 50 regularly.
  • Do not pick or squeeze spots in the treated area.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Acne Treatment near Mumbles: Your Questions Answered

How much does acne treatment cost?

Prices start from £60 per session and depend on the size of the area. We confirm your price at the free consultation, before any treatment.

Does IPL acne treatment hurt?

It can feel warm or slightly prickly, but it’s generally well tolerated and settles once the session is over.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically three to six sessions, around four weeks apart, though this varies from person to person. Maintenance sessions can help afterwards.

How long does a session take?

Usually around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Will IPL cure my acne?

IPL is a way of managing acne rather than curing it permanently. It helps reduce breakouts, and top-up sessions can help maintain clearer skin.

Can I have treatment if I use retinol or take antibiotics?

Retinol and some antibiotics make skin more sensitive to light, so we’ll need to wait until you’ve stopped. We’ll tell you when it’s safe to begin.

Can IPL help with acne scars?

IPL fades the red and brown marks spots leave behind. Pitted scars need fractional laser, and we can assess both.
