Why Choose Our Acne Treatment

Lynton Lumina IPL, 585nm

Treatment uses the Lynton Lumina IPL at 585nm, which acts on acne bacteria and redness.

Works beneath the surface

Unlike creams, light can reach below the surface to calm inflammation and oil production.

Doctor-led care

Your acne history, skin type and medication are reviewed before treatment begins.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. A course of three to six sessions, about four weeks apart

Acne is not only a teenage problem. Breakouts, redness and oily skin can carry on well into adult life and affect how you feel about your skin. If you live in St Clears and creams and cleansers have not been enough, IPL treatment at our Llanelli clinic can help to calm active acne and reduce how often you break out.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Causes Acne?

Breakouts happen when overactive oil glands and dead skin cells block the pores. The trapped oil feeds bacteria, which leads to the inflamed, sore spots we recognise as acne. Clients from St Clears often tell us they’ve struggled to find specialist acne treatment closer to home.

It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, red spots or painful lumps, usually across the face, chest or back. Hormones, genes and some medicines all contribute; poor hygiene does not cause it.

We’re a doctor-led clinic in Llanelli, registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we treat active acne using the Lynton Lumina IPL system from £60 a session.

How IPL Acne Treatment Works

Treatment uses pulses of intense light from the Lynton Lumina’s 585nm handpiece. This light targets acne bacteria, settles inflammation and redness around spots, and can reduce excess oil, which helps limit future breakouts.

At the same time, IPL lightens the red marks (PIE) and brown marks (PIH) left after spots heal. Sessions are given as a course, roughly four weeks apart.

What Results to Expect

Most people need three to six sessions for a significant improvement, with fewer and less inflamed breakouts as the course goes on. Maintenance treatments can be arranged if needed.

IPL helps to control acne. It is not a permanent cure, and results vary from person to person. For severe or scarring acne we may advise you to see your GP as well, because prescription treatment may be needed.

IPL is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 4. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • About 30 minutes: most sessions take around half an hour
  • Mild sensation: warmth or tingling that passes once treatment ends
  • A course: three to six sessions, about four weeks apart
  • Brief redness: usually settles within hours
  • Little downtime: normal activities straight away, avoiding heat for 24 to 48 hours
  • Honest advice: if IPL isn’t right for your acne, we’ll suggest alternatives

Your Free Consultation

We start by looking closely at your skin and confirming your skin type. We’ll ask how long you’ve had acne, what treatments you’ve tried, and about any medication or skincare, particularly retinol and antibiotics.

By the end, you’ll know if IPL is right for you, the number of sessions we’d suggest and the price, and there’s no pressure to book.

To secure your appointment we take a £30 deposit. It comes off the price of your treatment, or we refund it in full if you decide not to go ahead. Please read our cancellation policy before you book.

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for four weeks beforehand. Tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen on the area if it is exposed.
  • Tell us about any medication and skincare you use. We cannot treat you while you are using retinol or taking certain antibiotics, because they make the skin more sensitive to light.

After each session

  • Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours, including hot baths, showers, saunas and excessive exercise. This reduces the risk of blistering.
  • Apply aloe vera gel three to four times a day to soothe the skin and help it heal.
  • Keep the area out of the sun for four weeks, or apply SPF 50 regularly.
  • Do not pick or squeeze spots in the treated area.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Acne Treatment near St Clears: Your Questions Answered

How much does acne treatment cost?

Prices start from £60 per session and depend on the size of the area. We confirm your price at the free consultation, before any treatment.

Does IPL acne treatment hurt?

You may feel warmth or tingling with each pulse. Most people find it comfortable enough, and it passes quickly.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients need between three and six sessions, spaced roughly four weeks apart. Some benefit from occasional maintenance sessions afterwards.

How long does a session take?

Usually around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Will IPL cure my acne?

IPL is a way of managing acne rather than curing it permanently. It helps reduce breakouts, and top-up sessions can help maintain clearer skin.

Can I have treatment if I use retinol or take antibiotics?

Retinol and some antibiotics make skin more sensitive to light, so we’ll need to wait until you’ve stopped. We’ll tell you when it’s safe to begin.

Can IPL help with acne scars?

It helps fade red (PIE) and brown (PIH) marks. For indented scars and texture, we use fractional laser, which we can discuss at your consultation.
