Acne is not only a teenage problem. Breakouts, redness and oily skin can carry on well into adult life and affect how you feel about your skin. If you live in Porthcawl and creams and cleansers have not been enough, IPL treatment at our Llanelli clinic can help to calm active acne and reduce how often you break out.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Causes Acne?

When the skin produces more oil than it needs, pores can become blocked with sebum and dead cells. Bacteria thrive in those blocked pores, and the result is inflammation and breakouts. In Porthcawl, where people spend a lot of time at the beach, back and chest acne can feel especially hard to hide.

Acne can range from blackheads and whiteheads to inflamed spots and deeper cysts, typically on the face, chest and back. It’s influenced by hormones, family history and medication, and has nothing to do with hygiene.

At Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic, a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, we treat active acne with the Lynton Lumina IPL system, from £60 a session.

How IPL Acne Treatment Works

Illustration: the light destroys the acne-causing bacteria trapped in the blocked pore, and its heat shrinks overactive oil glands so they produce less oil. Over a course of sessions, breakouts calm and the skin settles. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

Our Lynton Lumina IPL system uses a 585nm handpiece that sends pulses of light into the skin. The light acts on acne-causing bacteria, reduces inflammation and redness around active spots, and can help to reduce oil production.

It also helps to fade the red (PIE) and brown (PIH) marks that spots can leave behind. Most people have a course of sessions, spaced around four weeks apart.

What Results to Expect

Most people need three to six sessions for a significant improvement, with fewer and less inflamed breakouts as the course goes on. Maintenance treatments can be arranged if needed.

IPL helps to control acne. It is not a permanent cure, and results vary from person to person. For severe or scarring acne we may advise you to see your GP as well, because prescription treatment may be needed.

IPL is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 4. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Around half an hour: per session, depending on the area
  • Gentle warmth: most clients find it easy to tolerate
  • Three to six sessions: spaced about four weeks apart
  • Some redness: which settles within hours
  • No real downtime: avoid saunas and hot baths for a day or two
  • Honest assessment: we’ll explain what IPL can and can’t do

Your Free Consultation

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for four weeks beforehand. Tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen on the area if it is exposed.
  • Tell us about any medication and skincare you use. We cannot treat you while you are using retinol or taking certain antibiotics, because they make the skin more sensitive to light.

After each session

  • Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours, including hot baths, showers, saunas and excessive exercise. This reduces the risk of blistering.
  • Apply aloe vera gel three to four times a day to soothe the skin and help it heal.
  • Keep the area out of the sun for four weeks, or apply SPF 50 regularly.
  • Do not pick or squeeze spots in the treated area.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Acne Treatment near Porthcawl: Your Questions Answered

How much does acne treatment cost?

Prices start from £60 per session and depend on the size of the area. We confirm your price at the free consultation, before any treatment.

Does IPL acne treatment hurt?

It can feel warm or slightly prickly, but it’s generally well tolerated and settles once the session is over.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your skin and how it responds, but most people need three to six sessions about four weeks apart, with maintenance treatments if needed.

How long does a session take?

Usually around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Will IPL cure my acne?

It isn’t a cure, but it can bring active acne under control and reduce how often you break out. Occasional maintenance treatments help keep results going.

Can I have treatment if I use retinol or take antibiotics?

Not while you’re using retinol or certain antibiotics, because they increase light sensitivity. We’ll advise you on timing at your consultation.

Can IPL help with acne scars?

IPL reduces the colour of marks left by spots, such as red marks (PIE) and brown marks (PIH). Indented scars and uneven texture are treated with fractional laser, and we can assess both at your consultation.
