Why Choose Our Acne Treatment

Lynton Lumina IPL, 585nm

We use the Lynton Lumina intense pulsed light system with its 585nm handpiece to target the bacteria and inflammation behind breakouts.

Works beneath the surface

Light reaches below the surface of the skin, where creams and cleansers cannot, to calm redness and help reduce excess oil.

Doctor-led care

Treatment follows doctors’ protocols, with your skin type, acne history and medication checked before we start.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A personalised plan and a clear price
  3. A course of three to six sessions, about four weeks apart

Acne is not only a teenage problem. Breakouts, redness and oily skin can carry on well into adult life and affect how you feel about your skin. If you live in Swansea and creams and cleansers have not been enough, IPL treatment at our Llanelli clinic can help to calm active acne and reduce how often you break out.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Causes Acne?

Acne develops when the skin’s oil glands produce too much sebum. The excess oil and dead skin cells block the pores, bacteria multiply in the blocked pores, and the skin becomes inflamed.

That is why acne shows up as a mix of blackheads, whiteheads, red spots and deeper, sore lumps, most often on the face, chest and back.

Hormones, family history and some medicines all play a part. Acne is very common and is not caused by poor hygiene.

How IPL Acne Treatment Works

We treat active acne with the Lynton Lumina intense pulsed light (IPL) system, using the 585nm handpiece. It delivers pulses of light into the skin.

The light targets the bacteria involved in acne and reduces the inflammation and redness around active spots. It can also help to reduce excess oil, which lowers the chance of future breakouts.

IPL also reduces the colour left behind by spots: the red marks known as post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) and the brown marks known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Treatment is usually given as a course of sessions spaced about four weeks apart.

What Results to Expect

Most people need three to six sessions for a significant improvement, with fewer and less inflamed breakouts as the course goes on. Maintenance treatments can be arranged if needed.

IPL helps to control acne. It is not a permanent cure, and results vary from person to person. For severe or scarring acne we may advise you to see your GP as well, because prescription treatment may be needed.

IPL is suitable for skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 4. Tanned skin cannot be treated, and that includes fake tan.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Around 30 minutes: most sessions take about half an hour, depending on the size of the area
  • Mild discomfort: most people feel warmth or tingling, which is usually well tolerated and passes once treatment is finished
  • A course of sessions: three to six sessions for most people, about four weeks apart
  • Mild redness: any redness usually settles within hours
  • Little to no downtime: you can carry on with normal activities, avoiding heat for the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Honest advice: if IPL isn’t the right option for your acne, we’ll tell you and suggest alternatives

Your Free Consultation

Your first visit is a proper assessment. We look at your skin, check your skin type and ask about your acne history, the treatments you have already tried and any medication or skincare you use, including retinol and antibiotics.

You’ll leave knowing whether treatment is suitable, how many sessions we recommend and what it will cost. There’s no obligation to go ahead.

Acne Treatment Prices

Acne treatment starts from £60 per session. The price depends on the size of the area being treated, and we confirm it at your free consultation, before any treatment. You pay per session.

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for four weeks beforehand. Tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen on the area if it is exposed.
  • Tell us about any medication and skincare you use. We cannot treat you while you are using retinol or taking certain antibiotics, because they make the skin more sensitive to light.

After each session

  • Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours, including hot baths, showers, saunas and excessive exercise. This reduces the risk of blistering.
  • Apply aloe vera gel three to four times a day to soothe the skin and help it heal.
  • Keep the area out of the sun for four weeks, or apply SPF 50 regularly.
  • Do not pick or squeeze spots in the treated area.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.
