  3. Prepare the wart at home, then CryoPen freezing in seconds

Warts and verrucae are small, rough growths on the skin caused by a virus. They are common and usually harmless, but many people want them gone because of how they look or because they catch and get in the way. If you live in Carmarthen and want one removed, we freeze warts and verrucae with the CryoPen at our clinic in Llanelli.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Are Warts and Verrucae?

Absolutely. A verruca is a wart that grows on the sole of the foot, and we freeze it with the CryoPen using the same technique.

How CryoPen Wart Removal Works

Illustration: the CryoPen delivers a fine, precise jet of ultra-cold nitrous oxide onto the wart. The extreme cold turns the fluid inside its cells into sharp ice crystals, which rupture the cell walls and destroy the infected tissue, while the surrounding skin is left unharmed. The treated wart then darkens, dries and falls away, usually within one to four weeks. Larger warts and verrucae may need a second freeze if still present after four weeks. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We use the CryoPen to freeze warts and verrucae. It directs a fine jet of nitrous oxide at the wart, freezing it within seconds.

Its precision means only the wart is targeted, while healthy skin is left alone. There’s no cutting, stitching or anaesthetic. You may notice some itching for about 10 minutes afterwards, which is a normal reaction.

What Results to Expect

Most treated warts and verrucae drop off within 1 to 4 weeks. One treatment is often enough, but larger lesions may need two. If it hasn’t gone after 4 weeks, a second freeze is needed. As warts are caused by a virus, a new one can sometimes appear.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are usually small and short-lived. A blister may appear where the wart was frozen, although this is unusual with the CryoPen’s precise jet, and it heals on its own.

As the skin recovers, it can look a little paler or darker than the skin around it, which normally fades over a few months. In rare cases, treating areas like the fingers, where nerves lie near the surface, can leave temporary tingling or numbness, and freezing over coarse hair can damage the follicles. We’ll go through these with you first.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Very quick: the CryoPen only needs a matter of seconds on each wart
  • Brief sting: most people feel a quick cold sting and mild itching afterwards
  • Possible second session: bigger warts and verrucae may need freezing twice
  • Falls away: usually within 1 to 4 weeks
  • Carry on as normal: there’s no downtime
  • Straight talking: if a lesion isn’t right for freezing, we’ll say so

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • One month before your first treatment, start preparing the wart or verruca in one of two ways: apply Salactol, following the product instructions carefully, or cover the whole lesion with zinc oxide tape.
  • The night before your appointment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes.
  • After soaking, gently remove all the hard skin from the lesion with a pumice stone or a file. All of the hard skin needs to come off for the treatment to work well.
  • Stop using Salactol or zinc oxide tape straight after your first treatment.
  • Before each further treatment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes and gently remove the hard skin again.
  • Tell us about any medication you take and any medical conditions, particularly anything affecting circulation or healing.

After each session

  • Do not pick the treated area at any time. Picking makes it take longer to heal.
  • If a scab is knocked off by accident, healing takes longer, but the result should be the same.
  • If a blister appears, leave it alone and do not pop it. It will go down by itself.
  • If a blister does pop and the area weeps, use an antiseptic cream such as Savlon or Germolene twice a day, and cover it with a plaster if you wish.
  • You can also use antiseptic cream if the area becomes tender.
  • If the wart or verruca is still there after 4 weeks, contact us about a second freeze.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Wart Removal near Carmarthen: Your Questions Answered

How much does wart removal cost?

Wart removal starts from £50. The price depends on the number of warts, and we confirm it at your free consultation, before any treatment.

Do you treat verrucae?

Yes. A verruca is a wart on the sole of the foot, and we freeze verrucae with the CryoPen in the same way.

Do I need to prepare before treatment?

Yes. Apply Salactol or zinc oxide tape to the wart for a month beforehand. The night before your appointment, soak it in warm water for 20 minutes and gently file away the hard skin.

Does CryoPen wart removal hurt?

Most people feel a brief cold sting lasting a few seconds, followed by mild itching for around 10 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

Often just one, though larger warts and verrucae may need a second freeze if they’re still present after 4 weeks.

How long does it take for the wart to fall off?

Usually within 1 to 4 weeks of treatment.

What if I get a blister?

Try not to touch it, as it will flatten on its own. If it pops, apply antiseptic cream morning and evening and cover it with a plaster.

Can the wart come back?

It can happen. The virus behind warts means a new one can occasionally appear, or the original can return.

Is there any downtime?

There’s none. You can return to work or school and normal activities immediately.
