The treatment is non-invasive, with no cutting and no stitches.

Doctor-led care

Before treating, we make sure the lesion is a wart or verruca and safe to freeze.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A clear price before treatment
  3. Prepare the wart at home, then CryoPen freezing in seconds

Warts and verrucae are small, rough growths on the skin caused by a virus. They are common and usually harmless, but many people want them gone because of how they look or because they catch and get in the way. If you live in Kidwelly and want one removed, we freeze warts and verrucae with the CryoPen at our clinic in Llanelli.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Are Warts and Verrucae?

Yes. Verrucae on the soles of the feet are frozen with the CryoPen in the same way as warts elsewhere on the body.

How CryoPen Wart Removal Works

Illustration: the CryoPen delivers a fine, precise jet of ultra-cold nitrous oxide onto the wart. The extreme cold turns the fluid inside its cells into sharp ice crystals, which rupture the cell walls and destroy the infected tissue, while the surrounding skin is left unharmed. The treated wart then darkens, dries and falls away, usually within one to four weeks. Larger warts and verrucae may need a second freeze if still present after four weeks. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We freeze warts and verrucae using the CryoPen, which applies a fine, pressurised jet of nitrous oxide directly to the wart. It takes seconds.

Only the wart is treated, and the surrounding skin is left untouched. There’s no need for cutting, stitches or anaesthetic. A short spell of itching, around 10 minutes, is normal afterwards.

What Results to Expect

Treated warts and verrucae generally fall off within 1 to 4 weeks. Many need only one treatment, but larger ones may need two. If it’s still there after 4 weeks, we’ll re-freeze it. Being viral, warts can occasionally reappear elsewhere.

Possible Side Effects

The CryoPen is a low-risk treatment. Now and then a blister develops over the treated spot; it’s not common, as only the wart is frozen, and it settles by itself.

Afterwards, the skin may look slightly lighter or darker for a few months, occasionally longer. Rarely, there may be temporary numbness or tingling where nerves are close to the skin, such as the fingers, and freezing over coarse hair can damage the follicles. You’ll know all of this before any treatment.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • In and out: freezing takes seconds
  • Short-lived discomfort: a quick cold sting and some itching for around 10 minutes
  • One to two sessions: larger warts and verrucae often need a second freeze
  • Natural shedding: the wart falls away within 1 to 4 weeks
  • No recovery needed: go straight back to your day
  • Honest from the start: we’ll tell you if freezing won’t suit your lesion

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • One month before your first treatment, start preparing the wart or verruca in one of two ways: apply Salactol, following the product instructions carefully, or cover the whole lesion with zinc oxide tape.
  • The night before your appointment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes.
  • After soaking, gently remove all the hard skin from the lesion with a pumice stone or a file. All of the hard skin needs to come off for the treatment to work well.
  • Stop using Salactol or zinc oxide tape straight after your first treatment.
  • Before each further treatment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes and gently remove the hard skin again.
  • Tell us about any medication you take and any medical conditions, particularly anything affecting circulation or healing.

After each session

  • Do not pick the treated area at any time. Picking makes it take longer to heal.
  • If a scab is knocked off by accident, healing takes longer, but the result should be the same.
  • If a blister appears, leave it alone and do not pop it. It will go down by itself.
  • If a blister does pop and the area weeps, use an antiseptic cream such as Savlon or Germolene twice a day, and cover it with a plaster if you wish.
  • You can also use antiseptic cream if the area becomes tender.
  • If the wart or verruca is still there after 4 weeks, contact us about a second freeze.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Do you treat verrucae?

Yes. A verruca is a wart on the sole of the foot, and we freeze verrucae with the CryoPen in the same way.

Do I need to prepare before treatment?

Yes. For four weeks before treatment, use Salactol or zinc oxide tape. On the evening before, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes and gently remove the hard skin.

Does CryoPen wart removal hurt?

You’ll feel a cold sting for a few seconds. Mild itching for about 10 minutes afterwards is completely normal.
