Warts and verrucae are small, rough growths on the skin caused by a virus. They are common and usually harmless, but many people want them gone because of how they look or because they catch and get in the way. If you live in Porthcawl and want one removed, we freeze warts and verrucae with the CryoPen at our clinic in Llanelli.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Are Warts and Verrucae?

Absolutely. A verruca is a wart that grows on the sole of the foot, and we freeze it with the CryoPen using the same technique.

How CryoPen Wart Removal Works

Illustration: the CryoPen delivers a fine, precise jet of ultra-cold nitrous oxide onto the wart. The extreme cold turns the fluid inside its cells into sharp ice crystals, which rupture the cell walls and destroy the infected tissue, while the surrounding skin is left unharmed. The treated wart then darkens, dries and falls away, usually within one to four weeks. Larger warts and verrucae may need a second freeze if still present after four weeks. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We use the CryoPen to freeze warts and verrucae with a precise jet of nitrous oxide. It takes just a few seconds per wart.

Only the wart is targeted, and the healthy skin around it isn’t affected. There’s no cutting, no stitches and no anaesthetic. You may feel some itching for around 10 minutes afterwards, which is normal.

What Results to Expect

Most treated warts and verrucae fall off within 1 to 4 weeks. Many need just one treatment, though larger ones often need two. If it’s still there after 4 weeks, a second freeze is needed. Being viral, warts can occasionally return.

Possible Side Effects

Most people have no problems beyond a little redness. A blister can sometimes form, but because the CryoPen freezes only the wart, this is uncommon and it resolves naturally.

Treated skin can heal with a lighter or darker patch that usually fades over several months. Occasionally, freezing over nerves near the surface, for example on a finger, leads to temporary numbness, and hair follicles in coarse-haired areas can be affected. We discuss every possible effect before we start.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • In and out: freezing takes seconds
  • Short-lived discomfort: a quick cold sting and some itching for around 10 minutes
  • One to two sessions: larger warts and verrucae often need a second freeze
  • Natural shedding: the wart falls away within 1 to 4 weeks
  • No recovery needed: go straight back to your day
  • Honest from the start: we’ll tell you if freezing won’t suit your lesion

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • One month before your first treatment, start preparing the wart or verruca in one of two ways: apply Salactol, following the product instructions carefully, or cover the whole lesion with zinc oxide tape.
  • The night before your appointment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes.
  • After soaking, gently remove all the hard skin from the lesion with a pumice stone or a file. All of the hard skin needs to come off for the treatment to work well.
  • Stop using Salactol or zinc oxide tape straight after your first treatment.
  • Before each further treatment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes and gently remove the hard skin again.
  • Tell us about any medication you take and any medical conditions, particularly anything affecting circulation or healing.

After each session

  • Do not pick the treated area at any time. Picking makes it take longer to heal.
  • If a scab is knocked off by accident, healing takes longer, but the result should be the same.
  • If a blister appears, leave it alone and do not pop it. It will go down by itself.
  • If a blister does pop and the area weeps, use an antiseptic cream such as Savlon or Germolene twice a day, and cover it with a plaster if you wish.
  • You can also use antiseptic cream if the area becomes tender.
  • If the wart or verruca is still there after 4 weeks, contact us about a second freeze.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Serving Porthcawl and the Coast

Porthcawl’s beaches, pools and surf clubs mean plenty of time barefoot, which unfortunately makes verrucae easy to pick up and pass on.

Wart Removal near Porthcawl: Your Questions Answered

How much does wart removal cost?

Wart removal starts from £50. The price depends on the number of warts, and we confirm it at your free consultation, before any treatment.

Do you treat verrucae?

Yes. A verruca is a wart on the sole of the foot, and we freeze verrucae with the CryoPen in the same way.

Do I need to prepare before treatment?

Yes. Apply Salactol or zinc oxide tape to the wart for a month beforehand. The night before your appointment, soak it in warm water for 20 minutes and gently file away the hard skin.

Does CryoPen wart removal hurt?

Expect a brief, cold sting for a few seconds and some itching for about 10 minutes afterwards.

How many treatments will I need?

Many warts need only one. Larger warts and verrucae often need two; if it’s still there after 4 weeks, a second freeze is needed.

How long does it take for the wart to fall off?

Expect it to come away within 1 to 4 weeks.

What if I get a blister?

Leave the blister intact and it will settle by itself. Should it burst, use antiseptic cream twice a day and protect it with a plaster.

Can the wart come back?

In some cases. As warts are caused by a virus, there’s always a small chance of a new one developing, even after successful treatment.

Is there any downtime?

None. You can carry on with your normal routine straight away.
