Doctor-led care

We confirm the lesion is a wart and suitable for freezing before any treatment.

How it works

  1. Free consultation and skin assessment
  2. A clear price before treatment
  3. Prepare the wart at home, then CryoPen freezing in seconds

Warts and verrucae are small, rough growths on the skin caused by a virus. They are common and usually harmless, but many people want them gone because of how they look or because they catch and get in the way. If you live in Morriston and want one removed, we freeze warts and verrucae with the CryoPen at our clinic in Llanelli.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Are Warts and Verrucae?

We do. A verruca is simply a wart on the underside of the foot, and the CryoPen freezes it just as it would a wart on the hand.

How CryoPen Wart Removal Works

Illustration: the CryoPen delivers a fine, precise jet of ultra-cold nitrous oxide onto the wart. The extreme cold turns the fluid inside its cells into sharp ice crystals, which rupture the cell walls and destroy the infected tissue, while the surrounding skin is left unharmed. The treated wart then darkens, dries and falls away, usually within one to four weeks. Larger warts and verrucae may need a second freeze if still present after four weeks. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We treat warts and verrucae with the CryoPen, freezing them with a highly accurate jet of nitrous oxide in a matter of seconds.

Only the wart is treated, with the healthy skin around it left alone. No cutting, stitches or anaesthetic are involved. You may feel itchy for around 10 minutes afterwards, which is normal.

What Results to Expect

Most warts and verrucae fall off within 1 to 4 weeks. Many need one treatment, but larger lesions may need two. If it hasn’t gone after 4 weeks, a second freeze is needed. Because warts are viral, a new one can occasionally develop.

Possible Side Effects

CryoPen treatment carries a low risk, and most side effects are minor. Occasionally a blister forms on the treated area; it’s less common with the CryoPen because only the wart is frozen, and it settles without help.

The healed skin may be slightly lighter or darker than the surrounding area for a few months, sometimes longer. Rarely, freezing near nerves close to the surface, such as on the fingers, causes temporary numbness or tingling, and on areas of coarse hair the follicles can be affected. We explain all of this before treatment.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Very quick: the CryoPen only needs a matter of seconds on each wart
  • Brief sting: most people feel a quick cold sting and mild itching afterwards
  • Possible second session: bigger warts and verrucae may need freezing twice
  • Falls away: usually within 1 to 4 weeks
  • Carry on as normal: there’s no downtime
  • Straight talking: if a lesion isn’t right for freezing, we’ll say so

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • One month before your first treatment, start preparing the wart or verruca in one of two ways: apply Salactol, following the product instructions carefully, or cover the whole lesion with zinc oxide tape.
  • The night before your appointment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes.
  • After soaking, gently remove all the hard skin from the lesion with a pumice stone or a file. All of the hard skin needs to come off for the treatment to work well.
  • Stop using Salactol or zinc oxide tape straight after your first treatment.
  • Before each further treatment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes and gently remove the hard skin again.
  • Tell us about any medication you take and any medical conditions, particularly anything affecting circulation or healing.

After each session

  • Do not pick the treated area at any time. Picking makes it take longer to heal.
  • If a scab is knocked off by accident, healing takes longer, but the result should be the same.
  • If a blister appears, leave it alone and do not pop it. It will go down by itself.
  • If a blister does pop and the area weeps, use an antiseptic cream such as Savlon or Germolene twice a day, and cover it with a plaster if you wish.
  • You can also use antiseptic cream if the area becomes tender.
  • If the wart or verruca is still there after 4 weeks, contact us about a second freeze.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Wart Removal near Morriston: Your Questions Answered

How much does wart removal cost?

Wart removal starts from £50. The price depends on the number of warts, and we confirm it at your free consultation, before any treatment.

Do you treat verrucae?

Yes. A verruca is a wart on the sole of the foot, and we freeze verrucae with the CryoPen in the same way.

Do I need to prepare before treatment?

Yes. Treat the wart with Salactol or zinc oxide tape for a month before your first appointment. The night before, soak it in warm water for 20 minutes, then gently remove hard skin with a pumice stone or file.

Does CryoPen wart removal hurt?

You’ll feel a short cold sting lasting a few seconds. Some itching for about 10 minutes afterwards is normal.

How many treatments will I need?

Many clear after one. If a wart is still there after 4 weeks, we’ll freeze it again.

How long does it take for the wart to fall off?

A treated wart or verruca should fall off within 1 to 4 weeks.

What if I get a blister?

Don’t burst it. Let it settle naturally. If it breaks, use an antiseptic cream twice daily and keep it covered with a plaster.

Can the wart come back?

Occasionally, yes. Warts are viral, so although treated warts usually clear, a new one can appear in time.

Is there any downtime?

There isn’t any. You can go straight back to work or your day.
