Warts and verrucae are small, rough growths on the skin caused by a virus. They are common and usually harmless, but many people want them gone because of how they look or because they catch and get in the way. If you live in Laugharne and want one removed, we freeze warts and verrucae with the CryoPen at our clinic in Llanelli.

Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic is in the centre of Llanelli. We are a doctor-led clinic registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, and we have been treating clients since 2016.

Every client starts with a free consultation. There’s no pressure and no sales pitch, just an honest view of what treatment can and can’t do for you.

What Are Warts and Verrucae?

Yes. Verrucae are warts on the soles of the feet, and we treat them with the CryoPen in exactly the same way.

How CryoPen Wart Removal Works

Illustration: the CryoPen delivers a fine, precise jet of ultra-cold nitrous oxide onto the wart. The extreme cold turns the fluid inside its cells into sharp ice crystals, which rupture the cell walls and destroy the infected tissue, while the surrounding skin is left unharmed. The treated wart then darkens, dries and falls away, usually within one to four weeks. Larger warts and verrucae may need a second freeze if still present after four weeks. © Cowell St Skin & Hair Clinic.

We use the CryoPen to freeze warts and verrucae with a precise jet of nitrous oxide. Each one takes just seconds.

The jet targets only the wart, leaving healthy skin unaffected. There’s no cutting, stitching or anaesthetic. Some itching for around 10 minutes afterwards is normal and settles on its own.

What Results to Expect

Warts and verrucae typically fall off within 1 to 4 weeks. Many need only one treatment, but larger ones often need a second. If it’s still there after 4 weeks, a further freeze is needed. As they’re viral, new warts can sometimes appear.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are generally mild. A small blister can form but is uncommon with the CryoPen, since the healthy skin isn’t frozen, and it will go down on its own.

The area may heal a shade lighter or darker than the skin around it; this usually fades over a few months. Very occasionally, freezing near surface nerves, such as on the fingers, causes temporary tingling or numbness, and coarse hair in the area may be affected. We’ll talk this through at your consultation.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

  • Seconds per wart: each wart is frozen for just a few seconds
  • Little discomfort: a short cold sting, then some itching for around 10 minutes
  • One or two freezes: larger warts and verrucae often need a second treatment
  • Gone in 1 to 4 weeks: the wart comes away naturally as the skin heals
  • No time off: go straight back to work or your normal routine
  • Honest advice: we’ll tell you before treatment if freezing isn’t suitable

Your Free Consultation

Your free consultation confirms that the lesion is a wart or verruca and that freezing is appropriate. We’ll also go through your medical history.

You’ll know the price before treatment begins. If we can’t be sure what a lesion is, we’ll recommend a GP check first.

To secure your appointment we take a £30 deposit. It comes off the price of your treatment, or we refund it in full if you decide not to go ahead. Please read our cancellation policy before you book.

Before and After Your Treatment

Before you come in

  • One month before your first treatment, start preparing the wart or verruca in one of two ways: apply Salactol, following the product instructions carefully, or cover the whole lesion with zinc oxide tape.
  • The night before your appointment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes.
  • After soaking, gently remove all the hard skin from the lesion with a pumice stone or a file. All of the hard skin needs to come off for the treatment to work well.
  • Stop using Salactol or zinc oxide tape straight after your first treatment.
  • Before each further treatment, soak the area in warm water for 20 minutes and gently remove the hard skin again.
  • Tell us about any medication you take and any medical conditions, particularly anything affecting circulation or healing.

After each session

  • Do not pick the treated area at any time. Picking makes it take longer to heal.
  • If a scab is knocked off by accident, healing takes longer, but the result should be the same.
  • If a blister appears, leave it alone and do not pop it. It will go down by itself.
  • If a blister does pop and the area weeps, use an antiseptic cream such as Savlon or Germolene twice a day, and cover it with a plaster if you wish.
  • You can also use antiseptic cream if the area becomes tender.
  • If the wart or verruca is still there after 4 weeks, contact us about a second freeze.

You’ll be given aftercare advice to take home, and you can call us with any questions.

Wart Removal near Laugharne: Your Questions Answered

How much does wart removal cost?

Wart removal starts from £50. The price depends on the number of warts, and we confirm it at your free consultation, before any treatment.

Do you treat verrucae?

Yes. A verruca is a wart on the sole of the foot, and we freeze verrucae with the CryoPen in the same way.

Do I need to prepare before treatment?

Preparation helps. Use Salactol or zinc oxide tape for a month beforehand, and the night before, soak the wart for 20 minutes and file away the hard skin gently.

Does CryoPen wart removal hurt?

Most clients feel a brief cold sting for a few seconds, then some itching for around 10 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

Most warts need one treatment, while larger ones and verrucae may need two.

How long does it take for the wart to fall off?

It typically drops off within 1 to 4 weeks as the skin heals.

What if I get a blister?

Leave it alone and don’t pop it; it will go down by itself. If it does burst, apply antiseptic cream twice a day and cover it with a plaster.

Can the wart come back?

Sometimes. Because the cause is viral, a treated wart can occasionally come back, or a new one can form somewhere else.

Is there any downtime?

None. You can travel home and carry on as normal.
